Chonburi edge closer to top

Chiangmai: AFC Cup 2102 quarter-finalists Chonburi edged closer to top spot in the Thai Premier League after beating TTM Chiangmai 1-0 in their 15th round match at 700th Anniversary Stadium, Chiangmai. With the win, Chonburi who are at second spot with 14 matches played, cut their deficit from seven to five points from league leaders Muangthong United who have played a match more than The Shark. Chonburi have also recorded five straights wins with the latest victory. The AFC Cup quarter-finalists, who have yet to taste defeat in this year's continental club competition, are gearing up for a last-eight clash with an Al Shorta side looking to become the fifth Syrian club to contest the trophy following the inaugural AFC Cup final between Al Jaish and Al Wahda in 2004, Al Karamah's runners-up finish in 2009 and Al Ittihad's triumph a year later. The Thais host the first leg on September 18 before the return fixture in the Middle East on either the 25th or 26th, which will be played in Zaqra, Jordan due to the social unrest in Syria.
